How can we make clothes using 3D printing technology? Find your windows
Ideally, the answer to this question is: “in a 3D printer like any other product.” But if you don’t have access to such equipment – not a big deal. The main thing that would help you solve these problems – an understanding of how it works and what needs to be done in order to get a three-dimensional structure.
What do you need?
The first thing that will help in printing clothes, – a 3D printer is not required.
You can do this manually. So what do we need for this?
A needle and thread of course! In addition, when working with threads, it is useful to have a pair of special scissors for cutting fabric.
And also, in order not to get confused in space-time coordinates when creating models, you will need an office assistant who will understand the geometry of this science.

Ok. We considered all the necessary materials and tools. Now let’s look at what we can create using this technology?
You can make clothes like any other product – for example, shoes or pants (see figure above).
But it makes no sense to print clothing using classical 3D printers due to their limitations: they are designed for printing three-dimensional objects with smooth surfaces (figurines like trolls or dragons), but if you try to print something more serious (for example, the handle of your favorite mug), then there is a problem: the size of the smallest details will be equal to the size of a fly.
But on today’s market, more and more affordable printers for home use appear, made on the technology SLA / DLP, which allows you to print parts with very fine details.
In addition, as opposed to classical 3D printing technologies that use three “point coordinates”, new printers allow users to create volumes by controlling light beams from several projectors at once.
Also, some companies have already implemented an algorithm for converting.STL data into G-code, which prepares a three-dimensional model for printing using two-dimensional equipment (for example laser engraving machines or cutting tables).
Another possibility of creating clothes using a 3D printer in the production of fibers from which you can weave fabrics. With this technology, almost any type of fabric can be created at home: for example, cotton or woolen.
It should be noted that not all printers are able to print such materials with high quality. In general, it makes no sense to waste time on printing clothes if your printer does not allow you to create the necessary material.
Finally, there is another way to make clothes using a 3D printer – through the use of special software and a modeling table again made on the technology SLA / DLP. This Software allows users to draw a three-dimensional pattern or model of clothing (see figure above). Such models are often called CAD models since they are created using special computer programs (Computer-Aided Design, CAD).
Some 3D printers allow the user to take a model from this software and reproduce it on their own. The photo above shows how users can do this directly using a laser engraving machine.

Also, after processing the data in the CAD system, you can make a template for laser engraving machines.
Perhaps, this method will be valued by those users who are engaged in clothing production using 3D printers. But do not forget that all models must be adapted to the size of your printer, which means that it is necessary to scale them appropriately before processing. The picture above shows how this process is done.
And one more thing – if you’ve read everything up to this point, then maybe you’re interested in what software does an engineer use when working with 3D printers? For example, I usually develop my own program using Qt technology (see figure above). It allows me to create three-dimensional models and also has improved features for printing clothes from a three-dimensional printer.
Of course, not all engineers develop their own software for coordinating a 3D printer, but sometimes it can be very useful if you want to improve some existing functions or create new ones. In the photo above, I drew a pattern on a T-shirt using my software.

Most 3D printed materials can be recycled. They are also biodegradable. The clothes are made with organic cotton, recycled only fabric, and silk organza.

By all accounts and measures, MakerGirl is on the rise — the next big thing in the world of 3D printing.
And yet, when we contacted MakerGirl via email to find out more about her, she went by only one name: John. Male pronouns were used as well, such as “he” and “him.” It was only upon researching this article that we found out that he is now “she” — namely, Rebecca Hansen, now famous as MakerGirl.
This followed days during which we had chatted with him over Skype under his (now her) handle @MakersWish.
It’s a common enough practice these days for 3D printing company reps to adopt a single name, particularly when exhibiting at a trade show or giving a talk somewhere. It is far less common for an individual engaged in some form of 3D design work to do so — which made us wonder just what was going on with MakerGirl and why this person felt the need to use such an identity online.
Thus we were quite surprised when Hansen contacted us via email to let us know that she had been “outed” as male by 3DPrint.com (“3D Printing Company Apologizes After ‘MakerGirl’ Revealed As Male”) last week (although it now appears that he may have been mistaken for female at that time).
Today, Hansen informed us that she would be “going forward” with her true identity.
Hansen showed remarkable maturity in this exchange, taking responsibility for what she said was an error on her part when choosing the wrong name to use online. This is not something we often see from someone so young, and it’s commendable. We can only hope that there are no other mistakes like this in the future; if MakerGirl must stand or fall on her own merits, then let her do so. She has our support either way.

Lee-Ann van der Merwe, fashion designer, and owner of an accessory company share her work on Facebook every day to inspire other makers and artists. She has many fans that follow her and like or comment on her posts.
Even big companies such as Disney South Africa commented on her post with interest in buying one of the bracelets she made for herself. Her post went viral after a fan named Siviwe Khumalo shared it with the Hipster Army page, which has over 1 million followers!
After this happened,-Ann received so many requests from other fans to make one for them too.
The bracelet is made in two parts and glued together. The bracelet will not come off easily; it’s actually quite hard. It is printed in flexible filament, but can withstand pressure and does not break! It is also very comfortable to wear, making it perfect for everyday use.

How to make 3d printed t-shirts?
Until recently I was pretty much unaware of how advanced 3d printing had become.
Of course, I knew about it, but apart from the ones that are created for medical purposes or to create scale models or something like that, I actually thought that this technology would not be used by consumers any time soon because of its high price.
I was blown away, but still, there were some things that didn’t seem very interesting to me.
That included anything related to clothes and accessories, simply because I’m not a “style” person and I never cared about what kind of style is currently in or whatever.
This might actually be my biggest flaw as a human since I just can’t understand why people would want to kill a perfectly good bull for a pair of leather shoes. It’s not like you need them in order to survive. But let’s forget about fashion now… If you are interested, there is plenty of information online! So let’s go back to the 3d printed T-shirts topic.
I think that this will be another new beginning for 3d printing! If you can personalize some clothes, people will buy them. I mean, try to imagine how cool it would be if you could get your initials or something else custom printed on your T-shirt. Wouldn’t this make a unique gift? Or maybe not so unique but still cool (at least in my opinion)

3d printers can be real-time-savers for creating prototypes or even actual parts of a mechanism, especially if you’re doing a lot of iterative testing and assembly. For people who work with machine parts, though, 3D printers can sometimes be prohibitively expensive – the RepRap project was created to change that by developing open-source 3D printer designs that anybody could build themselves or even sell as long as they make the schematics available as well.
Today I’m going to go over how to use a popular derivative of the original RepRap design called Mendel90, which is named after one of its developers Hosein John Mostafavi from Australia. Before we start building’s take a quick look at the finished product in the video below.
The Mendel90 is a great design because it can be easily scaled up or down, and it’s very sturdy. It was originally designed in 2009 by Mostafa with this thought in mind: “If I needed to make something big then I wanted to label it ‘Made on a RepRap’ rather than ‘Made in China. We are all hackers at heart, our pride is to hack things together.” This 3D printer features both extrusion-based printing (like any other FDM machine) as well as the ability to do so much more. If you haven’t already guessed from the name of this website, there’s also an extensive list of upgrades available for Mendel90 owners so check those out as well.
The first step is to gather all the required materials and tools for this project, which you can see in the picture above.
This includes: The Mendel90 printed parts and hardware (from 3D Printer Czar ), a print cooling fan, an Arduino Microcontroller, two 18650 battery packs, a leveling Pro Micro holder, a glass build platform surface (or just use blue painters tape), three Tinkerforge stepper motor drivers ( Bipolar, Unipolar ) as well as their respective power modules.
Of course, don’t forget about filament either – I used white PLA from Makerbot for this build.

With all the necessary pieces collected, we move on to their assembly. I recommend building this printer inside a box to keep things safe from dust and children – at least for the time being ;). Start by printing all of the Mendel90’s printed parts, then begin assembling them one by one as you would normally build a RepRap machine. Some important notes:
For the lower part that holds the extruder stepper motor, do NOT tighten any screws until they are all in place otherwise it may crack. Also during this stage be sure to mount your power supply (18v, 12v, or 24v) onto the back panel.
The upper Y carriage is meant to fit on top of LM8UU bearings so make sure they slide smoothly. If not, sand them down lightly with some fine sandpaper.
The upper Y motor mount can be fitted with either a NEMA17 or 23 stepper motor.
The same part number in both cases; the only difference is the length of the shaft ( 17mm for NEMA23).
Once all printed parts are built, start by adding heat-set inserts to the LM8UU bearings as you would for any RepRap machine (if you haven’t already) before fitting them onto each axis. Also, add some grease into each bearing before screwing it into place.
Once that’s done begin assembling the X-axis assembly following Mostafa’s assembly manual. After this stage is complete, take note of how much space is left between the bottom edge of Z smooth rods and their holders. Keep this in mind for later when we fit in the Z-axis assembly.
With all of your Mendel90 printed parts ready, it’s time to start assembling them using the hardware provided with the kit. Begin by securing each smooth rod into place using M5 bolts with washers on top and bottom, making sure that their lengths are equal on both sides.
Then add Y end stop micro switches followed by mounting brackets. I personally use a Tinkerforge MicroSD breakout board instead which you can see below (shown without microswitch). The reason for this is because I like to control my machine via software (i.e G-code) instead of physical buttons; however, you’ll need to do some soldering first if want to go down that route.
With that done, add a stepper motor onto each of the Y-axis mounts and secure them with M3 bolts, along with a belt clamp. Also, note where the belts sit on the carriage, you’ll need to know this for later on when we wire up the machine. Don’t tighten any screws yet!

Can you 3d print neoprene?
Yes, you can 3D print neoprene with FDM printers, but not currently with SLA printers. For this, you need SLS printers!
A good idea is to use flexible filament for printing parts that are designed to flex or absorb energy. You can find many flexible filaments already on the market today, some are even transparent. A quick search of “flexible filament” on Amazon returns multiple results – some of these are flexible enough you could probably wear them as a bracelet.
Some types known to be very bendable include NinjaFlex which has been used for high-end cosplay armor and was featured in Iron Man’s suit. Filaflex is also very flexible and BendLay is another type of flexible filament.
You can print parts inflexible, semi-flexible, or rigid filament. For the best results using flexible materials, it’s often better to scale up part dimensions by 1.5 or 2 before printing for bendable parts. This works well with NinjaFlex and BendLay filaments when set to low infill densities (10% for NinjaFlex).
On the other hand, semi-flexible filament like FilaFlex should be printed at lower temperatures when compared to normal ABS/PLA because of how it behaves when it’s warm versus when it’s cooled down. Its also recommended you print this over a flatbed to avoid warping due to heat exposure on large surfaces.
For rigid parts that need stiffness, consider using multiple walls/shells to increase the part’s overall dimension. This is where you can get creative because even though it’s 3D printing, you don’t have to stick with regular rectangular shapes – use angles or chamfers or radius corners for your parts for more professionally looking results!
A few examples of neoprene items 3D printed using flexible material include:
FDM printers are capable of creating almost all thermoplastic materials in existence today.
The only limitations would be if your printer does not support a temperature hot enough (if it doesn’t then you won’t be able to print TPU), and if the material isn’t available in filament form (most filaments can be purchased in 1kg spools).
Some materials are not available in regular filament form, but they can be purchased as pellets and then formed into filament. Starting with filaments is usually much cheaper than working with raw pellets because of how expensive pellet production equipment is.
