Single extrusion means that your machine can only use one type of filament material at once due to the design of its nozzle.
Multi-extrusion machines have more than one nozzle for each type of filament material which allows it to print with two or more materials at once!

Can you 3d prints in multiple colors?
The answer is a qualified “yes.”
The process for creating parts in two colors involves using two separate materials. As the printer builds the model, it will alternate between one color and another. In theory, this should be straightforward, but there are limitations to consider.
During the printing process, there can be no time lag between successive layers of different materials, or else they won’t bond together properly.

How to Print in Multi-Color with a Single Extruder?
Lars Brubaker, at ProtoParadigm, presents a very interesting technique in his Instructable on how can you print objects in more than one color with just a single extruder. As the author states:
“This instructable will show you how to greatly increase your options in multi-color and multi-material prints by using fewer materials and fewer nozzles.”
ProtoParadigm Lars Brubaker shows in the article how he managed to do this: First of all, there is some Material preparation; next, we have Extrusion tips (so that the extruded filament has correct diameter); then he uses Offset values (perimeter and infill) for different colors; finally, we use Ditto Build Chamber (a print surface made of magnets) to increase the number of options for multi-material prints.
“You can use this method to print objects with up to 4 different colors or materials in the same print. Because of the small number of nozzles, you can achieve high-quality color prints without compromising on speed.”
How it is done
To achieve multi-color printing, Lars Brubaker builds an object by printing two different infill types in two different colors. He specifies offset values per perimeter and infill for each color when he starts a new print layer. The software will automatically cut each extruder at the start of a new layer, so there are no changes needed in your slicing program.
As you may have already thought about in order to do that we need BuildTak or Ditto’s Build Chamber, which are two print surfaces made out of magnets.

According to Lars Brubaker, this technique will give you more freedom in designing objects with different colors and materials. But one thing must be kept in mind if using this technique: You can never have an infill that goes all the way to the edge of your model since every perimeter will need an end stop. Even though there are no changes needed in your slicing program after applying this method it is recommended to use Outline-Extrusion with 0.4mm per layer for this type of print.

During a presentation at Akita Prefecture University on May 28th, 2015 IMT Lab was demonstrating a demo model which has been made by using PITTA multi-color filament. A Filament Extruder is an accessory that feeds plastic into a 3D printer, to print out objects. The filament used for printing on 3D printers is not the typical filament you would find in a store. There are two key differences between what you would use at home, and what professionals would use: size, and material properties.
Printing filament comes in different sizes which are measured by decimeters (or diameters). A typical 1kg spool of ABS measures up at 2.85mm thick while PLA measures at about 2.00mm thick. This small difference will start matter as soon as you load it into your machine, so pay attention to this parameter before buying or making your own spools.
3D printers usually come with one, two, or three standard extruders. The extruder is what melts the filament and pushes it through the nozzle onto the build plate. It’s important to note that some desktop 3D printers don’t allow you to change the default extruder without actually upgrading it. This means that if your 3D printer doesn’t have a second (or third) extrusion head, even printing in two colors will be impossible on this machine. How about materials for printers? Best filament for printed models – inlay?
When you look for “filament” like PLA, ABS, PETG… make sure to look for a filament that is strong enough to be used in 3D printers. Most of the time, buying a roll of plastic from a local store won’t get you far – these rolls are not made with the same materials that 3D printing filaments are made from. It’s okay to start out with these standard materials if you’re new to 3D printing but bear in mind that they aren’t designed for strength and accuracy.
When it comes to color prints, make sure the colors look nice together when printed – this is another reason why having ABS or PLA is important when starting out: they come in a wide range of vibrant colors!
When looking for filaments online, there are two main places where people buy them: AliExpress or specialty websites. Aliexpress is great if you are new to 3D printing and don’t know where to start with materials, but make sure to check what others are saying about the product first before buying – some low-cost PLA filaments on Aliexpress might not be made of plastic.
Also, this might become more difficult as time goes by since these vendors usually go out of business after stealing money from people that never got their order or got a bad quality filament instead.

How to 3D Print Multiple Objects at Once?
3D printing is a way to print many objects at the same time. You can print as many as will fit on your build plate. This will reduce the time and work needed for that object as it does not need to keep cooling as long as it takes to do another object.
That’s a good question, and one that many people don’t even know exists.
Why is 3D printing limited to making one object at a time?
It seems wasteful to make a new copy of the same object again and again when we only need one (not including resin-based 3D printers), rather than saving some time by simply printing more objects concurrently. Ok, so there are machines where you can insert multiple spools and print several objects at once, but those aren’t true multi-extruder 3D printers.
With such a machine, each extruder is usually fed from its own spool and it lacks any mechanism for feeding filament into another extruder’s hotend orifice. If you want to print with two colors or materials, you have to swap filament between each extruder.

With a true multi-extruder 3D printer, there’s a mechanism in place which feeds filament from one hotend into another to make a single object composed of two or more colors/materials. You can also use it when printing with support material or when printing parts that need different infill types (or even when using multiple extruders for better overhangs).
